Henry Howard, Earl of Surrey: "A Complaint by Night"

"Alas! So all things..........my pain"
In this sonnet, the speaker expresses his sadness and sorrow because his beloved does not respond to his feelings. The speaker states that everything around him lives in peace, the birds, the sea, the stars and the beasts except him because he is deeply in love with his mistress. His mistress' rejection brings him into despair. The speaker proceeds to say that his feelings are mixed with joy and sorrow because whenever he thinks of the good times they spent together he becomes happy. But, unfortunately, whenever he thinks about the cause of his "disease" he feels sad to "live and lack the thing that should rid" his "pain" i.e. her.
